August 14th, 2004

Anticipating Minds announces the inclusion of a collection of error handling rules into the devAdvantage 2.0 beta program. The beta program is nearing its end, with a planned production release of devAdvantage 2.0 on August 31st. The new error handling rules offer a preview of what is coming next.

devAdvantage  is an automated code review tool that plugs into Microsoft® Visual Studio® .NET and analyzes C# code looking for bugs and issues. Unlike other static code analyzers, devAdvantage can also fix the problems found, making it a powerful quality assurance and productivity tool.

devAdvantage Beta 2.0 Release
The 2.0 beta program began on June 29th showcasing the new devAdvantage 2.0 features along with a collection of Naming Conventions rules. The beta program has been a great success with overwhelming participating and valuable feedback. Because of the success, Anticipating Minds has decided to introduce the next collection of rules, Error Handling, in to the beta program and extend the date another 2 weeks.

The devAdvantage 2.0 Beta program will conclude on August 31st 2004 with the official release of the production version and the beta licenses will extend until September 15th. The August 31st 2.0 release will include the Naming Conventions knowledge pack as well as updates to the existing Threading knowledge pack. The Error Handling knowledge pack will be released at the beginning of October 2004 with more knowledge packs soon to follow.

When released the pricing for devAdvantage 2.0 will be:
Professional Ed. with Naming Conventions Knowledge Pack
$175
Professional Ed. with Threading Knowledge Pack
$195
Professional Ed. Suite (all Knowledge Packs)
$295

Beta participants will receive a 45% discount

Error Handling Rules
Without effective error handling applications can experience unhanded problems, generate cryptic error messages to users and leave support staff with little or know information about what has occurred. The reality of development is that programmers tend to leave good error handling to the end, and when pressured on schedule, sometimes leave it out all together. The result is unstable applications, poor customer satisfaction and higher cost to support.

Through rigorous code reviews and adherence to best practices and standards applications can be made more robust and easier to support. The devAdvantage Error Handling Knowledge Pack provides a collection of rules that automate the rigorous review process detecting inadequate error and exception handling and helping the developer automatically correct the problems.

Many of the rules that will be included in the Error Handling Knowledge Pack are available in the current devAdvantage 2.0 beta program. The Error Handling Knowledge Pack will be available for purchase starting in early October 2004.

What to Expect Next
With these knowledge packs almost ready for release, Anticipating Minds has already begun working on the next version of the devAdvantage Community Edition Preview Knowledge Pack to showcase the knowledge packs to follow. These will include rules around performance, localization, design and software measurement.
